Marco Benevento: Live at Tonic

Marco Benevento is the current king of keyboards in New York City. Last November he performed at the Tonic each Wednesday. One night it was just him, on the other four it was guest players galore, including Mike Gordon, Mike Dillon, Scott Metzger and the other half of the Benevento/Russo duo, Joe Russo.

The tapes were rolling each night. The result:a 3CD set Live At Tonic, with the highlights of each evening. This is a set that you are not going to play in one session. Pick a disc each day and listen carefully. There are so many things going that you are likely to hit repeat.

Benevento performs a wealth of his own (co-written) material, takes on the classic jazzers and throws in a few popular covers like Fearless (Pink Floyd) and Gimme Me Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group). This is instrumental experimentalism at its finest. It's take-no-prisoners post-indie-without-a-safety-net music that will scare the shit out of all the modern R&B lovers. This is what your old hippie relatives will call "far out". Highly recommended.

Live At Tonic is released on Ropeadope. Release date: August 7th.
