Singer-songwriter Caroline Herring has released a proper follow-up for her acclaimed Lantana album, and this time it's just her and an acoustic guitar and banjo, with producer and musician David Goodrich helping out guitar, piano, e-bow, diddley bo, ukulele, bass and percussion.
Golden Apples of the Sun is the logical step after the stop gap EP Silver Apples of the Sun. The album kicks off with attribute to painter, writer, and naturalist Walter Anderson. It sets the tone for intimate album, steeped in literature. The percentage of covers is quite high - five against six self-penned songs, but given the Herring treatment it all fits - even when she tackles the Cyndi Lauper smash True Colors or the blues staple See See Rider. Herring has a knack of shaping her music like a poem or a good short story. It would be nice if they were all her own on the next one, but being a folk singer it's hard to step away from the legacy of her predecessors.
