Marco Benevento: TigerFace

Marco Benevento continues his quest for new sounds. The NYC jazz piano and organ player is a musical omnivore. Anything goes. His new album TigerFace even has what sounds like a tease of the Dire Straits' Money For Nothing. For lack of a better word Benevento is best described as an experimentalist, while keeping a firm focus on accessibility. Avant-garde yes, pop and rock yes - all within the space of the same track. Up first are two songs featuring vocals by Kalmia Traver (Rubblebucket), throwing in bits of hip-hop and dance. The road movie-like theme Eagle Rock is enhanced by three backing vocalists.

Will this put off his long time fans? Highly unlikely - they've gotten used to expecting the unexpected and they will love the eerie Soma and the old school piano of Do What She Told You. Big city jazz gets an outing during Escape Horse (with Mike Gordon on bass). TigerFace is an album with nine lives and then some. Benevento is a piano piper extraordinaire, a shape shifter with a gift for melody.
