Chris Greene Quartet: Music Appreciation

The Chris Greene Quartet goes against the grain by releasing a double album. Music Appreciation features reinvented jazz standards (Coltrane, Mingus, Shorter) and originals by three of the band's musicians. Tracks are allowed to go beyond four minutes mark, By holding back on overdubs and get the song on tape within one or two takes, the recording sessions gave birth to a sprawling collection of really great jazz, a front row seat at a club with superb acoustics.

Being seasoned musicians they didn't settle for playing the standards in a tried-and-true way. They messed with the time signatures, shaving half a beat from Firecracker, and slowed down Nostalgia in Times Square. As for the originals, Greene's cheerful The Moose Is Loose! and piano player Espinosa's Solution could grow into 15 minutes monsters on stage. Greene's Molar Melancholia can serve as a musical pain killer Molar Melancholia after the dentist's anaesthetic wears off.

Chris Greene Quartet:
Chris Greene: saxophones
Damian Espinosa: piano, keyboards
Marc Piane: double bass
Steve Corley: drums, percussion
