Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar are following the blues and paths that were explored by the likes of Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, and Sharon Jones. While her voice is no competition for the power of those two singer the vibe is all there, with an ace band and gospel-tinged backing vocalists. On their new album Run To Me they channel the Stax sound, with spot-on brass, comfy keyboard fills and sparse, but highly efficient, percussion.
Run To Me is basically an album about love in its various guises - joy, pain, doubt. It sounds pretty damn good, but it lacks a spark to make it stand out. There's nothing wrong with being in step with the tradition, but an own twist is needed to leave a more lasting impression.
