Reveller: Cold Engine Start

Dutch duo Reveller hit the ground running when their first song Hold the Horses was picked up as the main theme for Paul Verhoeven's movie Tricked. Produced by Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M.) singer Sven Sterk and guitarist Ramon de Wilde went for a tried-and-true alternative rock approach.

Their debut full-length Cold Engine Start is more of the same. They have a grab bag of powerpop hooks, but none of them really stand out. Sterk's lyrics come to rescue to make this album worthwhile. His heart is in the right place, Singing about the horrors of war in Pulse - the proceeds are donated to Warchild - and complaining that nothing is real anymore in Play. The Britpop of Hard Times, with a few nice twists and turns, deserves further exploration.

Cold Engine Start sounds good, but lacks the power of similar acts like Moke, even though that band's drummer Rob Klerkx helped them out.
