The Lachy Doley Group: Make Or Break

The Lachy Doley Group are one of those blues bands people might have heard of, or more specifically their leader and the band's namesake, a well respected Hammond player whose fluidity and knack for funky blues rock is in high demand among his peers. His trio however is stil struggling to get higher billing on festivals or play bigger venues. Their fifth 5th Studio album is called Make Or Break, which doesn't imply that they will throw the towel if it fails to sell just yet, but after eight years some serious soul searching is in order.

This is a band that plays the right kind of music in a wrong decade. They have a loyal audience, but they are basically making the same album over and over again. Make Or Break isn't bad, but it feels a bit generic. Blues can be predictable, but it should keep the listener captivated. There are only short moments of real inspiration when the music reaches a peak and the sum becomes great that its parts. When Doley unleashes his inner Jon Lord or Steve Winwood and lets rip, people start paying attention. And that's when his rhythm section awakes from their slumber to earn their keep.

Lachy Doley: Hammond C3, Whammy Clavinet, vocals
